It happens to everyone – you run back into the house for something before leaving and notice that your keys are locked inside. You’re stuck and can’t get back into your house or into your car to get where you need to go. Although there’s nothing fun about a home lockout, there are things you shouldn’t do to try and get back into your house.
First, don’t call 911 to get back into your house, unless the lockout is related to a true emergency, like a fire. In most cases, the fire department or the police department won’t send someone out to come to your rescue.
You should also not throw a rock at a nearby window or open door to try and get back into your house. Not only can this cause more damage than you would expect, but trying to climb through a window with shattered glass can be extremely dangerous.
If you notice that one of your upstairs windows is open, don’t try to scale your house or climb up onto the roof to open it. Just like trying to climb through a broken window, this can also be dangerous.
